What should we expect out of Deshaun Watson and the Browns.

The Browns QB position has been disputed over for a long time and been a top concern for Browns fans. In this article I am going to talk about the QB position, and how I understand the concern, but believe this is the best it’s been in a long time, and Browns fans should feel good about it.

Despite what many say, I think Deshaun Watson is an adequate starting QB at worst. I think arguing that he is not a starting level QB is silly and bound to embarrass you later. I can understand fans believing that he is not worth the contract, or that he will never be elite again, even though I do not agree, but Deshaun Watson is no bum. Deshaun Watson was good last season. Yes, Joe Flacco got more passing yards per game then him, but he got more passing yards then every other QB. Shouldn’t that make every other big contract up to question? Deshaun Watson didn’t play his best, but he was no slouch. He blew out 3 teams and led an incredible comeback against the Ravens as well, but just because he fell short in a nationally televised game, and he has issues off the field, people allow that to cloud their thinking and make a fool of themselves.

You can say that the teams Watson beat were “lesser teams” and had that the Browns had the number 1 defense. You would be right, however, that does not take away from the fact that Deshaun Watson played his best ball since coming to Cleveland and was turning the corner. How many blowout wins did Joe Flacco and PJ Walker have? Did they not have a number 1 defense? While Joe Flacco got lots of passing yards, he sabotaged the defense by throwing lots of interceptions at bad times, PJ Walker did the same thing. For me, watching the games made it evident that Watson was much better for this team then Joe Flacco, or any of the other QB’s. Yes, Watson through some interceptions, but not as many or as bad as Joe Flacco. When Joe Flacco was under center, the opposing team scored nearly twice the number of points then when Deshaun Watson was under center.

I agree last season was not enough to crown the trade a success, but it makes it silly to not still have an open mind about his future on the Browns. Last season gave me hope that Deshaun Watson may be able to stand up to the difficult schedule and live up his contract. Deshaun Watson is very talented QB, and after seeing his last games being his best ball, and with the coaching changes, I feel good about our QB starting QB situation. While Deshaun Watson didn’t get the 300+ yard games that fans want, he had a much better point differential then the other QB’s, he didn’t screw over our defense, and he was turning the corner before his injury.

I also feel good about our backup QB situation. Jameis Winston may not be starting material, but he is an experienced backup. It’s good to have a veteran to hold down the fort if Watson has an injury, and if to avoid the team being a disaster if Watson was to have another season ending injury. Seeing how the team was able to overcome adversity like almost no other team can or has done before, I feel great about the Browns next season. Even if Watson isn’t elite, its not a big deal, since the Browns have built an excellent roster around him that does not require stellar play. People say that would make the contract a failure. I don’t think so, because the Browns have still been able to pay more players 10+ million dollars per year than any other team, and also still have good drafts despite not having the 1st round picks.

Yes, the Browns did not have splash moves. However, the Browns were able to retain most of their key players, and also make improvements that were within their budget, like Zadarius Smith, Jerry Jeudy, Quiton Jefferson, etc. On top of that, we are getting Deshaun Watson, Nick Chubb, Dawand Jones, and many more players back from injury. We also have a much upgraded coaching staff. I think there is a good chance the Browns go into the playoffs feeling we have a solid shot at the Superbowl. What do you think? Follow me on twitter
