The Browns have moved off of Ken Dorsey and Andy Dickerson after a very disappointing season on offense. This is a Browns team that has regressed greatly since last year, and the most notable changes since last year are on the coaching staff. This suggests that coaching changes are part of what causes this 3-14 season. Both Watson and even DTR have shown regression from last year to this year. I think this is because Ken Dorsey runs an offense that is hard for QB’s to run, even Josh Allen struggled to handle it. Browns need to go in a new direction, of a running offense that wins in the trenches, not an offense that’s identity relies on the QB to be superman.
While Andy Dickerson was put in a tough spot, with injuries on the OL, I think he still needed to be fired. There was improvement throughout the season, but earlier in the season, the OL had tons of penalties, and could not get the little things right. There was no chemistry between the 5 OL. Then, as a NFL.com article stated, Mike Vrabel kind of took over the coaching of the offensive line. After that, the OL started cleaning things up. This nfl.com article combined with the fact that Roy Istvan, the asssitant OL coach was on hard knocks, but Andy Dickerson was not shown once, leads me to believe that Andy Dickerson did not adequately coach this OL, and no longer has much of a role on the team.
I don’t think the Browns should be done with coaching changes. Browns should also fire Nick Charlton, the run game specialist. The run game needs to be completely overhauled. I also believe that the Browns should fire the CB coach Brandon Lynch. Martin Emerson and Greg Newsome seem to have fallen off a cliff, while Newsome is dealing with a lingering hamstring injury, Emerson’s struggles seem purely because of technique. The CB room could use a new voice that can get the most out of his players.
