What should the Browns do at kicker?

This article is going to be a collection of my tweets talking about what the browns should do at kicker, formulated into an answer. When looking at free agent options, I was looking for someone who was accurate and reliable, not necessarily someone with a big leg.

First let’s go over who the free agent options are:

Mason Crosby:

10/10 on 20-29 yard field goals
8/8 on 30-39 yard field goals
6/7 on 40-49 yard field goals, or 85 percent. This is 4 % above league average.
1/4 on 50+ yard field goals

[2] which is league average. This last season, where these stats are from, he was great under 50-yard field goals. If he could do that this season, I would be happy. However, 7 attempts may be a small sample size. This seems like a pretty average kicker.

Solid option, but there is a option I like more later on

he was 13/14 in 20-29 yard field goals
5/5 in 30/39 yard field goals
7/11, or 63% in 40-49 yard field goals.(this is 20% below average for that range.)
2/2 in 50+ yard field goals.

[2] this gives him a 85% overall field goal percantage, which is average in the NFL. Most of his kicks were easy kicks, and all he could get was an average field goal percentage. This means he is a below average kicker. I don't think he is enough of an upgrade for the #Browns.

So far, Mason Crosby seems to be the best option so far. But stay tuned, I will go over my favorite candidate soon.

#Browns free agent kicker option: Randy Bullock
Bullock made all of his 10 kicks of field goals under 40 yards last season.
However, he was 6/8 in 40-49 yard field goals, which is a bit below NFL average for that range.

A Thread
Succop missed 2 of his 19 kicks under 40 yards.
He is 12/12 in kicks 40-49 yards. This is great, because we are looking for a kicker who can kick under 50 yarders consistently.

[2] he has only missed 2 kicks under 50 yards out of 31 kicks. This is a free agent we would be looking for, because we are not looking for a big leg, just accuracy. he was 2/7 in 50-59 yard field goals. This is a bit worse then his usual, but… 👇

I still would expect him to be pretty poor on 50-59 yard field goals. In his carear he has made about half. I would rather have an accurate kicker then Cade York at this point, so I think teh #Browns should consider signing Ryan Succop.

Now that we found a good free agent, what do we do with this information?

Would give Cade York a chance and keep him in the season, but if he continues to struggle, Ryan Succop should still be available. At that point I would go ahead and replace Cade York. #Browns #DawgPound https://t.co/X7gubJx5I4

But is he an upgrade from Cade York?

Ryan Succop was 12/12 on 40-49 yard field goals. league average is 81%, Cade York had 75%.

Answer is yes, a huge upgrade.
