Grading the Browns offense

In this article, I am going to grade and briefly analyze each position group on the browns.

QB review and grading:

The browns have 4 QB’s in Deshaun Watson, Josh Dobbs, DTR, and Kellon Mond. Deshaun Watson has been very successful in the past, and there is no reason to believe he can’t continue this. He is in a great offensive system this year. Last year coming in midseason was a terrible situation, causing him to struggle. There is no reason to believe he should not vastly improve this year. He should be an elite QB, like he has always been. DTR has played very well and shown potential in preseason and camp, but Josh Dobbs may retain the starting job, because DTR is a rookie at the end of the day. DTR seems like he could become a good backup. Kellon Mond likely won’t make the roster. May hang out on our practice squad.

Pros:

Deshaun Watson is a very successful QB who is in a good situation to play better than ever.

DTR has potential to be a good backup. QB

Cons:

Deshaun Watson hasn’t shown his greatness consistently on the browns.

The QB’s behind Deshaun Watson, the backups, have not proven anything in NFL games.

Final grade: A

RB review and grading

The Browns have 5 RBs in Nick Chubb, Jerome Ford (who is injured) Demetric Felton, John Kelly, Bassan Hall, and Jordan Wilkins. We all know Nick Chubb is an elite RB and among the best in the NFL. Jerome Ford could be a nice number 2 guy; however, he will be injured for a while. Until then, I would expect the browns to rotate between whoever makes the roster out of Felton, Kelly, Hall, and Wilkins.

Pros:

Nick Chubb is amazing

RBs behind Nick Chubb have potential, especially Jerome Ford.

Cons:

RBs behind Nick Chubb are unproven.

Final grade: A

WR room review: The browns have many WR’s, and I will only talk about some of them. Some of our main WR’s who I think will compete for the roster or be a lock for the roster are Amari Cooper, Elijah Moore, DPJ, Cedrick Tilman, David Bell, Austin Watkins, Anthony Schwartz. We know that Amari Cooper has had great chemistry with Jacoby Brisset, and I would expect the same and more with Deshaun Watson. Elijah Moore is having a huge upgrade at QB play and has potential. He has been lighting it up in training camp. DPJ has proven he is a good player and is statistically a very good deep threat. Cedrick Tilman is a player browns fans are very excited about and has been lighting it up in camp. Many people argue he is better than Jalin Hyatt, is college teammate. David Bell is a guy that many browns fans have quickly given up on, but I don’t think the browns have. I think David Bell is still a lock to make the roster. Austin Watkins has browns fans very excited after many plays, he has made in training camp. Keep in mind, we had a similar attitude towards Mike Harley last offseason, but he was cut, and went to the practice squad. I honestly think Austin Watkins won’t make the roster, because they can still have him on the practice squad. The browns might let someone who would not survive on the practice squad to make the roster. I think that person might be Anthony Schwartz. Anthony Schwartz would probably be signed off waivers if cut, because his speed gives him lots of potential. Anthony Schwartz has done good things this offseason, which browns fans have chosen to ignore. The browns may believe that his drops in games when it counts could be due to his mental issues, and if he resolves those issues, his flashes may turn into consistency.

Pros:

There are very talented players, a lot of these players have lots of potential.

There are a variety of skillsets at WR.

great depth.

Cons:

we don’t have elite WRs

WR’s besides Amari Cooper and DPJ aren’t proven.

Final grade: B+

TE room grade and review:

The browns have 3 TE’s who are likely to make the roster. David Njoku, Jordan Akins, and Harrison Bryant. This is a nice group. David Njoku could really be great with better utilization and better QB play. Jordan Akins has been playing well in camp and has experience with Deshaun Watson. Jordan Akins could be a good redzone threat. Being better in the red zone can get this offense to the next level. Harrison Bryant is a guy the browns still believe in after drafting him a couple years back.

pros:

talented group

variety of talents

Final grade: A-

Center review and grade:

the 2 centers I expect to make the roster are Ethan Pocic and Luke Wypler. Ethan Pocic was a top 3 center in 2022, and Luke Wypler has been playing well in preseason.

Pros:

elite starting center

backup center has potential

Cons:

backup center is not proven

Final grade: A

Guard room review and grading:

Browns have 2 elite guards in Wyatt Teller and Joel Bitonio. Behind them, they have depth like Wes Martin, Colby Gosset, and Michael Dunn.

Pros:

elite starters

depth

Cons: starters are older

Final grade: A

browns offensive tackle grading and review:

Browns main tackles are Jedrick Wills, Jack Conklin, Dawand Jones, and James Hudson. Jack Conklin should be fine, but there is some concern over regression and injuries. Jedrick Wills is a weak point on this offensive line. The hope is that RT Dawand Jones can switch to LT at some point and replace Wills at some point. If that doesn’t happen, we just have to hope with the great offensive line around him, Jedrick Wills can hold up.

Pros: Jack Conklin

Dawand Jones has potential

Cons: Jedrick Wills

Dawand Jones is not proven, just a prospect.

Jack Conklin regression could be a concern.

Final grade: C

offensive line final grade: B+

offense final grade: A-
