5 reasons the browns should re sign DPJ

DPJ is a young WR who is been constantly improving on the browns, while playing with Baker Mayfield, and Jacoby Brisset at QB. In this post I will be going through reasons the browns should consider resigning DPJ.

1: he is young and improving every year

DPJ is just 24 years old and is improving every year. I would rather get a young WR like DPJ who trending upwards on a longer and cheaper contract, then spend lots of money on DeAndre Hopkins, who is trending downwards. In 2020 DPJ had 304 receiving yards, in 2021 he had 597 receiving yards, and in 2022 he had 839 receiving, I would expect this trend of improvement to continue another year, especially with Deshaun Watson coming in.

2: He is a great deep threat

Everybody has been complaining all offseason about not having deep threat, then all the sudden we all decide it’s a good idea to get rid of our best deep threat to sign D Hop, a declining WR. DPJ was #7 in target quality rating in 2021, #4 in average target distance in 2021, and was also #3 in yards per catch in 2021. Deshaun Watson should be able to help DPJ reach his full potential as a deep threat, which leads me to number 3.

3: he will have better quarterback play

No disrespect to Jacoby Brisset, but DPJ will have greatly improved QB play this year. If he was able to be successful with Baker Mayfield, he should be great with Deshaun Watson. Deshaun Watson was #5 in deep ball completion percentage in 2020, #8 in 2019, #14 in 2018, and #6 in 2017

4: he won’t be alone

In 2021, DPJ had to be the number 1 receiver for most of the year, this is a lot to put on a 2nd year receiver. in 2022 he was the number 2 receiver, with the only other proven receiver being Amari Cooper. This year, he has a plethora of receivers around him, which should make it easier for him to do his thing.

5: Cedrick Tilman is just a prospect

We can’t just make an assumption that a 3rd round pick can be a starter WR before he even plays a game. remember, he is just a prospect, he has done nothing in the NFL. Even if the best-case scenario does play out and he is a starting level player, he probably would not play as well as DPJ would.

Baker Mayfield on the Browns certainly seemed to help with the receivers deep ball stats. So Watson might not be an improvement in that stat for the receivers. Mayfield was “in the top 10 in deep accuracy in all of his first 3 seasons in the league” https://www.patreon.com/posts/63353338
Either way, looking forward to see their dynamic on the field!
